General

What is South Pacific Health?

South Pacific Health is the group behind South Pacific Private, The Banyans, and Byron Private – three accredited mental health and addiction treatment providers across NSW and QLD. Each facility specialises in different program types, from hospital-based inpatient care to residential treatment.

What's the difference between the facilities?

South Pacific Private is a licensed private hospital offering inpatient and day programs for mental health, trauma, and addiction. The Banyans and Byron Private are residential treatment centres offering live-in programs in a non-hospital setting. The right fit depends on clinical need, duration, and level of care required.

Are your facilities accredited?

Yes. All our programs are NSQHS (National Safety and Quality Health Service) accredited.

What conditions do you treat?

Our facilities treat trauma, addiction, and a range of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Specific program availability varies by facility – see individual facility pages for details.

If I'm in crisis right now, what should I do?

Call 000 if you or someone else is in immediate danger. For crisis support: Lifeline 13 11 14 (24/7, also text 0477 13 11 14), Suicide Call Back Service 1300 659 467, Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636.

Seeking Help

Do I need a referral to access treatment?

It depends which facility. South Pacific Private requires a referral from a GP or psychiatrist for admission. The Banyans and Byron Private don’t – you can self-refer or have a health professional refer you.

Is treatment covered by private health insurance?

South Pacific Private is contracted with most major health funds and the DVA – insured clients typically pay only their excess. The Banyans and Byron Private are residential (not hospital) services, so private health insurance doesn’t cover treatment there. Both offer DVA and superannuation pathways instead – DVA funding at Byron Private is subject to individual approval, and The Banyans assists eligible veterans with DVA applications even though it isn’t DVA-contracted.

What happens when I first get in touch?

You’ll start with a confidential conversation with our team to understand your situation and needs. From there, we’ll guide you through an assessment and recommend the right program and facility for you.

For Family and Friends

Can family be involved in treatment?

Yes. Family involvement is part of treatment across our facilities, recognising that recovery affects – and is supported by – the people around you. The specific format depends on the program you or your loved one is in.

How do I start the process if I'm reaching out on behalf of someone else?

You’re welcome to contact us on behalf of a loved one, even if they’re not ready to reach out themselves. Our intake team can talk through the situation with you and explain the options available.

About Our Programs

What types of programs do you offer?

We offer inpatient hospital care, residential treatment, and day programs, depending on which program and level of care is needed. Not every program offers every type – inpatient care, for example, is only available through South Pacific Private.

How long do programs typically run?

Length depends on the program and program type, and is confirmed during your assessment. Residential and inpatient program types generally run from two to six weeks; day programs run over a longer period on a part-time basis.

Are programs tailored, or a set structure everyone follows?

Every program begins with a full clinical assessment, and your treatment plan is shaped around your individual needs from there. How that plays out – individual sessions, group work, or a mix of both – depends on the program.

What therapeutic approaches do you use?

Our programs draw on evidence-based approaches matched to your presentation, including individual and group psychotherapy, trauma-informed care, and complementary therapies such as equine and art therapy. Exact modalities depend on the program and your treatment plan.

What happens after I finish - is there aftercare?

Yes. Aftercare is planned with your treating team before you finish, to help maintain progress and keep you connected to support afterwards. Format and duration vary by program.

Do you offer detox as part of treatment?

We provide medically supervised withdrawal for mild-to-moderate cases, with clinical oversight. For more complex or severe withdrawal, our team will help arrange appropriate care before admission so you can begin your program safely.

Can I choose which program is right for me?

Choosing the right fit is a collaborative process, guided by clinical assessment of your needs. Our intake team will talk through your options and help identify the best match – including whether a different program within South Pacific Health may suit you better.

What does a typical day look like?

Each day is built around your individual treatment plan, combining clinical sessions with therapeutic activity and time to rest. Structure and pace depend on your program.

Is treatment group-based, one-on-one, or both?

This depends on the program. Some combine daily group therapy with individual sessions; others are entirely one-on-one with no group component. Your intake conversation will confirm the model used at your recommended program.
